“Jiu jitsu was about being ruthless on the battlefields, but Bartitsu is about experimentation, and bringing together anything that works,” explains Garvey. “Barton-Wright got moves from wrestlers, and stick-fighters, and boxers, and jiu jitsu masters from Japan, and basically put them all in the same room, and they kind of cross-fertilised.”
